Reiki is a spiritual palm-healing technique that’s used as an alternative mode of healing. This practice uses a lay-on-hand technique wherein the practitioner removes bad energy and distributes energy to remove blockages around the body. These energy blockages typically cause many forms of illnesses, whether it lies in the mental or physical realm.
Reiki is used to promote overall wellness throughout the body. The term Reiki roughly translates to “Universal life energy” in Japanese. This unseen form of energy is present in all observable matter of the universe and is a vital source of life.
Brought to the larger public by a man named Dr. Mikao Usui in the 1920s, Reiki continues to aid many people to live a more energetically balanced life. This therapy affects all parts of their being, such as their physical health, mental health, spiritual health, and emotional health.
What Are The Health Benefits of Reiki?
Reiki has helped hundreds of thousands of people in their journey towards healing. There are many advantages you can get from undergoing Reiki therapy with the right practitioner.
How does Reiki Therapy help our bodies? When our body is under stress, parts of our brain like the amygdala and prefrontal cortex work in conjunction to send distress signals to the rest of our body. This activates our fight or flight response. When that happens, it triggers the release of glucose from our liver, which increases blood sugar and causes an imbalance in the system.
Reiki therapy works to calm down the sympathetic nervous system and activate the parasympathetic, which allows your body to enter a more relaxed state.
Here are some of these specific health benefits that Reiki is used for.
1) Releases Tension in the Body
Reiki therapy places your body in a completely relaxed state. This helps remove the tensed-up feeling you get when worries and dread consume you in your day-to-day. The process of energy transferring to you promotes a calming effect on your body, making you feel more at peace and in touch with your innermost self.
2) Removes Energy Blocks
Regular Reiki treatment promotes the smooth flow of energy around your body. This, in turn, alleviates stress in the body and uplifts a wide array of other positive effects from the negative symptoms the individual faces. The removal of these energy bumps is necessary since energy blockages cause the body to feel an imbalance.
3) Good for Nervous System and Immune System
Reiki doesn’t just help alleviate anxieties and distress, it also promotes wellness in the gut area. Undergoing this technique will help both the immune system and the nervous system function back at their healthiest state. This happens when the parasympathetic nervous system gets reactivated, causing the body to relax and breathe easily.
4) Improves Clarity in the Mind
Reiki helps bring your thoughts to the present moment. In turn, this helps transfer your mind away from regrets from the past and anxieties for the future. It also promotes a more optimistic attitude, helping you see people, circumstances, and your life in general in a more positive light.
5) Promotes Emotional Clarity and Spiritual Growth
Reiki goes beyond just the physical health of our body. It also touches and cleanses the spiritual and emotional sides—vital parts of our entire being. This therapy allows you to think more clearly about your emotions, right up to the roots. It can bring people on a spiritual journey that’s both transformative and reflective.
6) Allows the Body to Naturally Heal
Reiki therapy doesn’t follow the prescription-based medicinal treatment that’s commonplace in hospitals. Instead of ingesting supplements and medicine, this therapy allows the energy flow of the person to naturally take over and heal the body. This practice accelerates the self-healing process of their body and its organ systems.
7) Relieves Joint Pain and Injuries in Body
Reiki therapy supports the recovery of surgeries and injuries. It’s common for many patients who’ve undergone major surgeries to practice Reiki as a way to relieve the pain and accelerate the recovery process. The self-care routine this therapy provides its patients goes well together with proper medicinal treatment.
8) Manages Symptoms from Diseases
Practitioners also recommend Reiki to help with other common diseases to boost recovery. Some of the diseases that Reiki practitioners tend to speed up or aid recovery include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, digestive problems, and infertility.

Can Reiki Treatment be Substitute for Medical Treatment?
Reiki should not be considered as a standalone therapy to treat your chronic or acute illness. Reiki’s main purpose is to complement other forms of medical treatments to help the recovery process. As this is the case, it’s common for many physicians and doctors to recommend Reiki practice as a supplement to aid patients along in their health journey.
Will I Benefit from Reiki if I’m Already in Good Health?
You still can benefit from Reiki; it doesn’t matter if you’re at the pinnacle of your health or at the onset of a terminal illness. The treatment works to improve your body’s response to unhealthy elements as best as it can. This applies to both preventative and healing measures alike.
In addition to that, Reiki also helps clear your mind, which can help you enter a state of harmony and remove feelings of stress. So yes, you can still benefit from Reiki therapy, no matter what you feel in your health journey.

How Does Reiki Work?
The practitioner acts as the conduit between you and the source of the universal energy. As the practitioner performs the Reiki therapy, they transport their energy field through their palms into you, the patient.
This energy doesn’t come from the practitioner, but from the universal life source that surrounds all living beings. The practitioner also draws some energy in this ritual, amplifying both sides.
During this ritual, the patient lays down on a flat surface and gets comfortable. The practitioner moves and situates their hands above the patient’s body, sometimes gently touching them, for a few minutes. This routine cycles up to 15 times around different parts of the body.
As the Reiki practitioner positions their palms on top of the patient, the flow of energy passes through that location of the patient’s body. During this time, the patient can feel a range of sensations—from heat, tingling, or an emotional epiphany.
